Aside an extraordinary audience in the gay population, König gained considerable popularity among heterosexual readers. König stories are drawn in a very expressive cartoon style. Always written with humor, his stories can treat serious themes as the tension between sexual freedom and the risk of infection by AIDS. His work has repeatedly described the daily routine of gay life. He also produced works that deal with heterosexual issues ("Bewegte Der Mann", "Hempel Sofa") or religious themes, criticizing the literal reading of the Bible as well as Islamic fundamentalism ("Dschinn Dschinn").

With over ten million copies of his comics, he is the author of the most famous German comic strip and best-selling worldwide. Several of his works have been adapted to movies ("bewegte Der Mann", "Kondom des Grauens", "Wie die Karnickel", "Lisístrata"), most are translated and sold abroad.
